President Pahor at meeting of ambassadors of EU Member States: "Every community, especially the European Union, must have a dream about its future – even if it might seem unattainable now."

Brdo pri Kranju, 23. 3. 2021 | press release

As part of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, attended a regular meeting with ambassadors of EU Member States. The meeting took place exactly on the day marking the anniversary of the referendums for the accession of Slovenia to the European Union and NATO (23 March 2003).

President Pahor emphasised that the European perspective was the guiding principle for the democratisation and independence of Slovenia and was embedded in its beginnings. Today, we aim for a European Union that is more united and efficient and closer to the people, he added.

According to President Pahor, we must use the current health crisis to make a shift towards a different, more sustainable development, taking into account climate change and the need for new technology and a green economy. He further expressed his expectation to be able to bring more positive energy and optimism to the debate on the EU’s future and to the EU itself. The EU is important because we are stronger together, which we have already proven, said President Pahor. We know what the EU’s common values are and how significant they are, so rather than deepening differences, we need to focus more on overcoming them.

President Pahor also presented his views on the enlargement process. It seems, he said, that the EU lacks either the political will or the knowledge, or indeed both, to take the Western Balkans seriously. He announced his intention to hold a Brdo–Brijuni Process summit in Slovenia soon, adding that French President Macron had also expressed interest in participating if the epidemiological situation allowed.

President Pahor concluded the meeting of the ambassadors of the EU Member States with the following thought: "Every community, especially the European Union, must have a dream about its future – even if it might seem unattainable now."
