Ljubljana, 5. 1. 2022 | press release
Today, on 5 January 2022, President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor received Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Wang Shunqing. President Pahor presented the Ambassador with a letter in which he informed the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, that he was very much looking forward to the opening of the Olympic Games and their possible meeting, but that today, due to the new and unpredictable wave of COVID-19 infections in Slovenia and around the world, he decided that he would not be attending the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games on 4 February 2022.
He expressed the hope they would meet once the health crisis had passed, hopefully later this year. President Pahor thanked President Xi Jinping for his expressions of support for their cooperation and for the cooperation between the two countries.
In his letter, President Pahor highlighted two initiatives that particularly connect Slovenia and China. He wrote that as part of his intention to attend this year's Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, he had supported raising awareness of the impact of climate change on winter sports through the "Triglav Glacier to Beijing" project. The Slovenian President has taken over the honorary patronage of the project and also expressed support for it in a special joint letter of support with Prince Albert II of Monaco. This project, as part of which a piece of the glacier from our highest mountain will be taken to the venue of this year's Olympic Games, was initiated by the Olympic Committee of Slovenia and is supported by the International Olympic Committee.
President Pahor also wrote that he was looking forward to the trip to China to discuss another initiative that brings the two countries together and which this year will result in the erection and unveiling of a monument in Ljubljana to honour the Slovenian missionary, astronomer and cartographer Hallerstein, who worked in China.
Ambassador Wang Shunqing thanked President Pahor for the reception and the letter, confirming that he will pass the letter on to China's president.
