During the meeting, President Pahor reiterated his wish for an all-around deepening of the relations between Slovenia and Lombardy. He, therefore, extended an invitation to President of Lombardy Fontana to visit Slovenia with an economic delegation, which Mr Fontana also accepted.

Mr Pahor continued by emphasising that the relations between the countries have never been better. Italy is one of Slovenia's most important foreign policy partners, while the strengthening of economic ties with Lombardy is of the utmost importance, as this region is Slovenia's biggest trade partner.

President Pahor and the President of Lombardy also shared their experiences in tackling the COVID-19 epidemic. President Pahor said that he monitored the situation in Italy during the first epidemic wave and admired their courage, while also sympathising with the victims. He also added that Slovenia learned a lot from their bitter experience. He expressed hope that the funding from the recovery and resilience plans will bring about development and a leap forward regarding sustainable development and not only serve to make up for lost time.

The Slovenian president believes that Lombardy can look to the future with optimism, also due to the preparations for the 2026 Winter Olympics hosted by Italy. He also recalled that Slovenia will host the 2023 Nordic World Ski Championships, while both countries will strengthen their excellent ties in the cultural field as the Slovenian town of Nova Gorica and the Italian town of Gorizia will bear the title 2025 European Capital of Culture, which is an outstanding example of cross-border cooperation.

"I am delighted that in October the Italian President and my friend Mattarella and I will address the people at Europe Square, which connects Nova Gorica and Gorizia, and inspire them to live in harmony and respect in a common European spirit," announced the President of the Republic, adding that Slovenia has the rare privilege of enjoying wonderful relations not only with its neighbours, but with all nations and countries in general.

"We are ready to strengthen our relations between Slovenia and Lombardy. I would be very pleased if you would also be open to cooperation," concluded President Pahor.

Before the meeting, President Pahor visited representatives of the Slovenian community in Milan. The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Slovenians in Milan and Slovenian Business Club associations, by the Consul General in Milan and the representative of the Slovenian Tourist Board in Italy.
