President Pahor and the Korean President Moon exchanged the highest state decorations

New York City, 21. 9. 2021 | press release

On the margins of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Slovenian President Borut Pahor met with the President of the Republic of Korea, Moon Jae-in.

President Pahor awarded the Korean President Moon Jae-in the Order of Merit for Distinguished Service, the highest decoration of the Republic of Slovenia, for his unwavering commitment to the processes of reconciliation and peaceful coexistence on the Korean peninsula and for strengthening the ties of friendship between the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Korea. The Korean President is the first Asian statesman to receive the highest honour of the Republic of Slovenia.

President Moon awarded the Slovenian President the Grand Order of Mugunghwa for his contribution to dialogue and understanding between nations and countries. This decoration has been awarded to only three world leaders to date: the King of Spain, and the presidents of Austria and Colombia.

On this occasion, the two presidents held bilateral talks in which they underlined the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on key international political developments.

President Pahor highlighted the opening of the Slovenian embassy in Seoul, which is planned for this year, while President Moon said that the possibility of opening a Korean embassy in Ljubljana would be seriously considered and that a Korean economic representative office would certainly be opened in Ljubljana in the near future.

President Moon congratulated President Pahor on Slovenia's second Presidency of the Council of the European Union and said that he was confident that cooperation between the Republic of Korea and the European Union would be further strengthened during this period.

President Pahor recalled his official visit to Seoul and the talks he and President Moon held on the importance of dialogue and reconciliation. He wholeheartedly supported President Moon's policy, he added. President Moon stressed that the Republic of Korea needed the support of the international community to work towards a peaceful resolution of the situation. At the end, the two presidents discussed the current situation in the world, focusing on US-China relations.

The Slovenian President extended an invitation to President Moon to pay an official visit to Slovenia, which he accepted with pleasure.

President Pahor last met the Korean President during his official visit to the Republic of Korea in February 2018. That was the first official visit by a Slovenian President at a time when Slovenia and the Republic of Korea were celebrating 25 years of diplomatic relations.
