Several Successful Deals Concluded for Slovenian Economy in Turkmenistan

The President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor is today and tomorrow making his first official visit to Turkmenistan where he is hosted by the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow. The President is accompanied by the Minister of Economy Metod Dragonja, a delegation of businessmen, and representatives of the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce.

The first official visit of the President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor aims to establish bonds of friendship and intensify political and economic relations between the two countries, especially to find opportunities to increase economic cooperation in the areas of telecommunications, high technology, pharmaceuticals, transport and tourism. The presidents exchanged views on key international issues, particularly on relations in Central Asia, and agreed on more cooperation within the UN and the OSCE in the field of peace building in the fight against terrorism, organized crime and drug trafficking.

The presidents paid special attention to the conversation about energy security and efficiency which are key elements of relations between the EU and Turkmenistan.

The talks were focused to strengthening economic cooperation, so the President of the Republic of Slovenia was accompanied by representatives of six Slovenian companies (Krka, Iskratel, Gostol-Gopan, Duol, Riko, Comita). Both presidents confirmed that there is a lot of potential to increase economic cooperation between the two countries and pledged to an organization of the first meeting of the joint economic commission in Slovenia before the end of the year. The commission will be led by the foreign ministers of Slovenia and Turkmenistan and will offer an opportunity to review actual cooperation projects and agree on how to implement them.

With this goal in mind, both parties signed an agreement on economic cooperation between the Republic of Slovenia and Turkmenistan, a memorandum of cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries and the protocol on cooperation between the Chambers of Commerce.

Economic cooperation between Slovenia and Turkmenistan is currently modest but is steadily increasing and reached a value of 12 million EUR in 2013, which represents an increase of 43% compared to 2012. The positive trend of trade in goods has continued in 2014: In the first four months of the year, exports to Turkmenistan reached 6.4 million EUR, which is twice as much than in the same period last year.
