President Pahor discusses current issues with German President Steinmeier

Ljubljana, 17. 3. 2021 | press release

Today, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, had a lengthy telephone conversation with the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, as part of regular discussions between these two presidents and friends who regularly consult each other on topical international issues.

The two presidents discussed the issue of grappling with the COVID-19 epidemic and assessed that the role of the European Union and its institutions and the close cooperation of its members were of paramount importance. They called for a more effective and uniform response to delays in the supply of vaccines.

President Pahor and President Steinmeier exchanged views on the situation in the Western Balkans: President Pahor shared with his counterpart his impressions from a recent visit to Sarajevo and informed him of the meeting of the leaders of the Brdo-Brijuni Process initiative, which he will organise in Slovenia as soon as conditions allow. President Steinmeier attended the meeting of this initiative held in 2017. The two presidents also touched on EU-US relations.

The presidents devoted considerable attention to the debate on the future of the European Union, in which the enlargement of the EU must also find a place, as this is an important strategic issue affecting Europe’s security and development.
