President Pahor in Brussels meets with European Parliament President Sassoli

Brussels, 4. 6. 2021 | press release

President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor is paying a visit to Brussels, where he will meet with the highest representatives of the European Union.

In the morning, President Pahor first met with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, with whom he openly and substantively discussed, in particular, the coming Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Later, President Pahor met with President of the European Parliament David Maria Sassoli. President Pahor highlighted the importance of the unifying role of the European Parliament. He assessed that during its presidency of the Council of the EU, Slovenia will make every effort to ensure that the presidency is as successful as possible. President Sassoli expressed his satisfaction that the level of trust in the EU has been slightly increasing of late. He mentioned that he was aware of the differences in Slovenia, as evidenced by the views on the issues of media freedom and following the non-appointment of the European delegated prosecutors. President Pahor noted that on every occasion he reminds the public of the importance of freedom of the media, and that he had called on the Government several times to resolve the systemic financing of the Slovenian Press Agency. He expects the procedure for the appointment of the delegated prosecutors to be concluded shortly.

President Sassoli presented the preparations for the first plenary session of the Conference on the Future of Europe to be held on 19 June 2021. President Pahor and President Sassoli agreed that the Conference deserves a serious, responsible and inclusive discussion and that sufficient time should be devoted to it. They also agreed that the Conference on the Future of Europe should not be relied on to solve everything and that countries must themselves seriously address the concerns and hold their own discussions. With regard to the Recovery and Resilience Facility, the Presidents assessed that it will strengthen the EU if the Member States see it as an important lever for economic revival and know how to use it for the transition to sustainable development.

President Pahor acquainted President Sassoli with the recent summit of the Brdo–Brijuni Process, the discussions thereon, and the conclusions included in the Brdo Declaration. President Sassoli confirmed that the European Parliament is ready for a serious discussion on faster EU enlargement, in which national parliaments would also participate. He added that he recently hosted a meeting of prime ministers from the Western Balkans.
