President Pahor and President Steinmeier for a strong and united European Union

Berlin, 26. 8. 2020 | press release

Today, President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor and President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier met for a working meeting in Berlin.

The two presidents considered the meeting necessary, useful and very sincere. In a longer, in-depth and friendly conversation they focused on the future of the European Union and ways of ensuring its unity. They exchanged views on some topical issues in the international community. In the light of the need for a close alliance, they discussed the European Union’s relations with the US and relations with Russia, Belarus, Turkey and the Western Balkans.

The two agreed on the need to strengthen the debate on the future of the European Union in which we must address common European values and visions that will bring us closer together into a strong community. Slovenia and Germany are committed to the European idea and the presidents will continue to make efforts for a common European future. The European Union is more than just a joint budget, they said.

Slovenia has several identities, as it is a Central European, Mediterranean and Balkan country at once, and it advocates closer cooperation in this context. New initiatives of closer cooperation are possible, but should not contradict the efforts for a closer, more united and effective European Union and Slovenia's active role at its core, alongside Germany and France.

In their statement to the press, the two presidents stressed that they would continue to maintain a regular dialogue and strengthen cooperation between the two countries at a bilateral level as well as within the European Union. To this end, President Pahor particularly highlighted that he and President Steinmeier also discussed the unity of the European Union in the context of the role of German-French cooperation, which is embedded in the foundations of the European Union and is also of crucial importance for our common future. Slovenia, President Pahor stated, wants to remain part of the core countries of the European Union.
