President Pahor took part in the main panel discussion, entitled “A Changing Europe in a Changing World”, together with Austrian President Heinz Fischer and Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta and presented his views on Europe’s future in light of combating the economic and financial crisis. In President Pahor’s opinion, the EU plays a crucial role in preserving the identity of small countries like Slovenia. He stressed that he still believed in a United States of Europe, not as a melting pot but as a union that respects the national identities of Member States.
He also emphasised that the Lisbon Treaty was no longer sufficient for the future of Europe and that therefore a new document should be drafted and presented to all Member States for decision. In this regard, he expressed his belief that the European elections next year presented an opportunity for the European Commission and the European Council to start working on the project of the European Constitution.
