President Pahor receives Macedonian Minister of Defence
Ljubljana, 9. 9. 2013 | press release
Slovenian President Borut Pahor received the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Macedonia, Talat Xhaferi, who is on a working visit to Slovenia.
Mr Pahor and his guest discussed topical issues, with an emphasis on the situation in Syria and Macedonia’s negotiations for EU and NATO membership. The Slovenian President reiterated Slovenia’s support for Macedonia’s membership of both structures and pointed out that it is time to reach a compromise in respect of Macedonia’s official name. In this context, Minister Xhaferi informed Mr Pahor about the course of negotiations under the aegis of the United Nations and conducted by the special representative for the naming dispute, Matthew Nimitz. A new meeting on this, coincidentally, is to take place in Skopje tomorrow. Minister Xhaferi took the view that there are real possibilities for reaching a compromise; it would, nevertheless, be very welcome if NATO and EU high representatives were to give this process their firm support, he noted.
The Slovenian President and his guest agreed that bilateral relations between the two countries were friendly and shared the view that this spirit of cooperation and support in joint projects should also be maintained in the future.
