President of the Republic of Slovenia in Klagenfurt with representatives of the Slovenian minority

Klagenfurt, 23. 7. 2020 | press release

In view of preparations for the 100th anniversary of the 1920 Carinthian plebiscite, which will be commemorated this year by the Presidents of Slovenia and Austria, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, met today in Klagenfurt with representatives of the Slovenian national community in the Republic of Austria and the Carinthian provincial governor, Dr Peter Kaiser.

President Pahor first met with representatives of the Slovenian national community in the Republic of Austria. He informed them on the agreements he had reached with Austrian President Van der Bellen on the commemoration of the centenary of the Carinthian plebiscite, and in turn the representatives of the minority presented to President Pahor their expectations regarding the implementation of minority rights. After the talks, the President of the Republic of Slovenia made a statement to the media.

The two presidents had agreed to jointly mark the 100th anniversary of the 1920 Carinthian plebiscite during President Pahor’s last year visit to Vienna, after President Pahor had consulted with minority organisations on the idea. On 10 October, the President of the Republic of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, will host the Slovenian President in Klagenfurt.

At a recent bilateral meeting in Vienna, the two presidents adopted a framework programme for the commemoration ceremony and a framework plan for the accompanying events. The commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Carinthian plebiscite is conceived as a message of peaceful coexistence between the two nations and neighbouring countries in a common European home.

President Pahor then met with the Carinthian provincial governor, Dr Peter Kaiser.
