President Pahor holds talks with Stuart Peach, the UK prime minister's special envoy to the Western Balkans
Ljubljana, 8. 4. 2022 | press release
Today, 8 April 2022, Slovenian president Borut Pahor held talks with Stuart Peach, who is the UK prime minister’s special envoy to the Western Balkans.
The two men exchanged opinions on the current situation in the Western Balkans. President Pahor highlighted the importance of the region, particularly given the current security situation, and restated his warning that the slow process of EU enlargement to the Western Balkans was leading to a revival of nationalism and calls to redraw certain borders. He added that, in his opinion, only an acceleration of the enlargement process could halt these dangerous moves, which threatened peace and security in this part of Europe and, in fact, the whole of the continent. The two men focused on the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and undertook to work more closely with the leaders of that country to speed up EU accession.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Mr Pahor and Mr Peach agreed that the conflict had to come to an end as quickly as possible, diplomatic negotiations continued and a peaceful solution found.
President Pahor stressed that it was vital for the European Union and its Member States to keep diplomatic channels with Russia open and operational.
