President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor: "Political dialogue is the most powerful means to avoid conflict."

Ljubljana, 3. 10. 2013 | press release

At the invitation of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia, the President of the Republic of Slovenia and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, Borut Pahor, today attended the Comprehensive Regional Ministerial (CRM), a meeting of South-Eastern Defence Ministers and the highest representatives of key international and regional political and security organisations, with the working title "Harmonisation of Regional Defence and Security Cooperation", where he also addressed the audience.

In his speech, the President highlighted the important role of NATO and the European Union in the provision of security and stability in the region. The enlargement of the European Union constitutes an integral part of further European integration, he said. He stressed the importance of political courage and determination for a successful conclusion of negotiations for EU membership and expressed his belief that such meetings strengthen mutual trust between countries and promote cooperation in the area of defence and security, which is a precondition for stability in the region. As an example of good neighbourhood cooperation, President Pahor cited the Brdo Process meeting held in Slovenia in July this year, as it gives the countries in the region the opportunity to resolve bilateral and regional issues: "Such meetings should make all countries realise that open issues can be resolved through tolerance and dialogue."

On this occasion, President Pahor also met with OSCE Secretary-General Lamberto Zannier. Their talks focused on the importance of neighbourly relations in terms of providing stability in the region.
