President Pahor after his meeting in Montenegro: “The process of European Union enlargement across the Western Balkans needs new dynamics”
Podgorica, 6. 5. 2021 | press release
Last night, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, paid a working visit to the President of the Republic of Montenegro, Mile Đukanović, in Podgorica. The meeting was intended to discuss the preparations for the summit of the leaders of the Brdo-Brijuni Process initiative, which will take place on 17 May in Slovenia to mark the tenth anniversary of the initiative.
After the meeting, President Pahor said in a statement for the media that the Brdo-Brijuni Process initiative is the most important political initiative in the Western Balkans, from which the Berlin Process also emerged. Pahor’s wish, as he stated, is to carefully prepare for the forthcoming meeting of the leaders of the initiative, also in light of Slovenia’s forthcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union: “I believe that there has been a standstill in the enlargement of the European Union, both on the part of the EU and on the part of the Western Balkan countries. My task is to find fresh ideas together with the leaders of the Brdo-Brijuni Process initiative on how to mutually (EU and Western Balkans) find a new strategy for faster EU enlargement to all Western Balkan countries, to prevent that these countries, in the lack of trust in imminent EU membership, consider more dangerous alternatives.”
President Pahor is aware that this is a complex task, but he and President Đukanović said that the member states of the initiative are best acquainted with this complexity. “Nothing is more important than giving people confidence in a peaceful and secure future even during an epidemic,” said the President of the Republic of Slovenia, adding that we must give new impetus to the enlargement process.
President Pahor expressed his sincere hope that the forthcoming meeting of the leaders of the initiative in Slovenia will successfully send the message of hope for wider support for the implementation of strategy, stability, reconciliation and the European perspective so that we can all be part of the European family. “This is the only thing that can ensure peace, security and prosperity in this part of Europe”, the President concluded.
Today, Thursday, 6 May 2021, at 1 p.m., President Pahor will meet with the President of the Republic of Albania, Ilir Meta, in Tirana. After the meeting, the two presidents will make statements to the media.
In the next days leading up to the Brdo-Brijuni Process meeting in Slovenia, President Pahor will meet in separate meetings with all the presidents of the countries involved in the initiative. Next week, on Thursday, 13 May 2021, in Pristina, he will meet with the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, and on Friday, 14 May 2021, in Belgrade, with the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić. He is expected to meet with the President of the Republic of Croatia and co-leader of the initiative, Zoran Milanović, on Saturday, 15 May 2021.
