Ljubljana, 31. 8. 2017 | press release
The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today welcomed the Chief of the Defence Staff of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach.
Their talks began with the confirmation of very good bilateral relations between the two countries as well as between their armed forces. They emphasised the importance of cooperation in military exercises, in the field of military education and training, since both countries have units in the Baltic area, which enables and further emphasises the importance of cooperation and exchange of experience.
The interlocutors devoted most of the discussion to a review of the security situation in the world and Europe. President Pahor emphasised NATO's role and importance in protecting and defending our common European values, saying that we must not neglect the importance of the greater independence of the European Union in the field of security and defence. They concluded that the UK, despite the process of withdrawing from the European Union, would remain an important foundation of our common European security.
President Pahor stressed the importance of paying attention to the security situation in the Western Balkans, and that in any event, everything must be done to maintain our common and global security through dialogue. Combating terrorism is, and will continue to be, our common task and commitment, whereby stabilising the situation in the Middle East is a priority.
The talks with the President of the Republic Borut Pahor were also attended by Dr. Andrej Osterman, Chief of the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces, and Sophie Honey, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the Republic of Slovenia.
